Centa Transmissions Ltd is a specialist Mechanical Power Transmission company established in 1979 to market throughout the UK a range of flexible shaft couplings manufactured in Germany by Centa Antriebe GmbH. At that time the majority shareholding in the company was British. As the business developed, a machining facility was added to allow the company to undertake product modifications and enable it to respond to special customer application requirements.

In 1984 the company secured the exclusive UK distributorship for a unique range of compact, high reduction ratio cycloidal speed reducers also manufactured in Germany by Cyclo, Getriebebau GmbH. The specialised nature of the product range has since been extended and the Gear Division now offers bespoke engineered drive solutions using three distinct and different gear principles - Cycloidal, Planetary and Spiral Bevel - for general industrial and precision drive applications. Gearboxes with low or zero backlash and high torsional stiffness are available for the most demanding applications.

During 1987 the company moved into a new 1000m/sq purpose built factory at Shipley, West Yorkshire. An extension to this facility is due for completion in Spring 1999 and will double the size to 2000m/sq.

At the end of December 1997, the majority shareholder and founder of the company retired and the company is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Centa Antriebe Kirschey GmbH Germany. Centa Antriebe has a worldwide turnover in excess of £40 million in mechanical power transmission products with subsidiary companies in Europe, America, Japan, Australia and representation in many other countries worldwide.

Centa Antriebe GmbH is one of the leading producers of torsional damping couplings for diesel engine drives and is the worlds number two supplier of these products for marine propulsion and auxiliary drives, with particular expertise in drives for high speed ferries.

Both the Coupling and Gear Divisions specialise in the provision of engineered solutions where standard products may be applied or adapted, or special solutions designed and manufactured.

The Centa UK facility now produces mechanical components in high volume for the worldwide Centa Antriebe sales network.
